Get Rid of YOUR Hip Soreness/Pain and Back of Leg Pain
The piriformis muscle is one of the external rotators of the hip. This simply means that is responsible for turning your foot out (think of walking like a duck). The importance of this muscle is that for sports that rely heavily on hip motion the muscle can be over worked. This leads to a cumulative injury cycle resulting in a shortened muscle and possibly an inflamed sciatic nerve. A condition called piriformis syndrome, which is when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated by the piriformis muscle causing pain, tingling and numbness in the buttocks and descending down the lower thigh and into the leg (along the path of the sciatic nerve). Note – This condition is also extremely common for women during pregnancy.
If you are experiencing this type of pain please watch the video below to see Dr. Shepard perform a recommended way of stretching the piriformis muscle.
You may also want to watch Dr. Shepard’s video on flossing the sciatic nerve to help decrease the tension on the nerve and relax the piriformis muscle as well. Sciatic nerve floss here –> https://bnchiro.com/sciatic-nerve-floss/
